Object Story by Cellina Doswell:
"I used a manual typewriter in the eighties. I was encouraged to learn out to type as it was a passport to securing an office job as a young black woman in England. The role of the typist at the time was seen as suitable work for women, as it did not take roles away from men. It also provided an easier option for girls from working class homes who had done well at school.

I got this typewriter many years ago as a gift. While it brought back fond memories of the yesteryears, it was also an unexpected find to discover the existence of a working electrical typewriter. I was curious and excited about this ‘Rolls Royce’ of typewriters, in working condition, which was seen as a status symbol of its era."
