Black and white fugu, traditional male ensemble from Ghana
LDEMS 2024.12.2 (b)
Fugu
"This fugu worn by my late father, Daniel Oduro who passed away in 2012. It is from northern Ghana from at least 30 years ago. He was fond of it and was in it as soon as the weather was amenable. He would wear this on special occasions like festivals. It’s a prestigious cultural attar which displays the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Northern Ghana people. Although fugu cloth originated from Northern Ghana, it has gained acceptance all around the country. In Southern Ghana, fugu is called Batakan. This ensemble hasn’t been cleaned since my father passed away, so that my mum could smell the clothes and remember him by, as it has his own unique smell. There are stains from events, some make-up on the shoulder area, from hugging family and friends.
