Object Story by Phil Page:
"Belonged to my parents who were very proud to buy it in the mid 1950’s. It’s one of the first electric percolators and took pride of place on the sideboard in the front room of 1 Denton Road, Edmonton N18. I was born.

My earliest recollection is my fascination with the percolation process which involved boiling water being forced into the upper chamber via the glass knob on top. This was accompanied by a unique ‘plopping’ noise and a lovely smell brewing coffee. Visitors were always keen to sample the coffee and experience the process.

We lived in Edmonton until the mid-1960s when we moved to Winchmore Hill, along with the percolator which was still in use.

When my parents retired to Norfolk, I took charge of the percolator and have been its guardian ever since.

Essentially, I have a lifetime association with the percolator, but the time has come for others to share in my enjoyment of the aesthetics and background to a process which has long since been superseded by far more exotic and complicated pieces of kit.

Ground coffee beans and hot water remain the basic ingredients, however."
